Plastic windows second-hand: advantages and risks

Plastic windows have become widespread because of their consumer properties. Warm, airtight, undemanding in maintenance and durable – this is an incomplete list of their advantages. However, the cost of windows, as well as any other building materials is constantly growing. Used plastic windows are much cheaper than new ones, and at first glance their purchase is a real way to save money. Read on to find out whether you should buy them and what complications may arise in this case.

Where do used windows come from

Secondly, windows are often changed by buyers of apartments in new buildings. Usually the builder installs translucent structures in a minimal configuration, for example, only with simple pivoting sashes. The owner of the apartment wants to use more convenient tilt-and-turn windows, so he is forced to install them himself. And to recover part of the costs, dismantled windows are put on sale.

Thirdly, window companies sell as used new windows, which for some reason customers refused.

What problems can arise when buying used windows

There is always a risk in buying windows at a low price:

  • it will not fit the dimensions of the opening;
  • when dismantling the frames, there may be damage in their construction that cannot be detected visually;
  • the characteristics of the windows will not be the best for the new place of installation, because of the inappropriate size of the sashes they will be inconvenient to use;
  • the hardware will be badly worn and will have to be replaced after installation at the new location.

The most serious problems listed are size discrepancies and hidden defects, while you can get used to the unfortunate positioning of the sashes.

If the product is more than necessary for installation in a particular aperture, it is better to refuse to buy it – not always increase the aperture is technically possible. If the purchased window is smaller, the aperture will have to narrow. In most cases, this is quite painless from a technical point of view, but still on the finalization of the aperture will require additional costs. They can be quite significant, and will override the savings.

Hidden damage to the window structure is more dangerous, because a layman cannot identify it by its appearance. In the worst case, the defect will show itself when such a window is already installed in a new place and will require urgent repair or complete replacement – then instead of savings will be additional costs.

When it makes sense to buy used windows

Each buyer weighs the pros and cons of the window in relation to his or her own circumstances and weighs the expected savings against the possible risks. Do not take the first used windows with an attractive price. Consider the offer from different angles:

  • compare the size of the offered products with the size of your window openings – ideally, a deviation of no more than 2-3 cm is acceptable;
  • assess how comfortable the windows will be for you: pay attention to the size and location of the sashes, the way they open, etc…;
  • carefully inspect each frame and sash from all sides to detect possible damage.

Conclusion

As practice shows, used windows are an excellent option for a seasonal summer cottage, utility room or as temporary translucent structures. If you need windows that are as comfortable as possible, with optimal characteristics for a particular room and guaranteed long service life, it is better to order the manufacture of windows according to individual requirements.
